Design Process & Playtest
Design Process & Playtest:
Our task was to create a 10 second game in any format. Therefore the only restriction we have was a time limit. Since the game is short, we were inspired by a Whac-A-Mole mechanic of fast pace and simplicity.
Once we were settled down to an idea, we decided to add a strong theme to add juiciness. Therefore, we added 2 characters, cat and rats. We hoped this will provide more challenges to the players because rats deduct the points and cats adds the points.
However, adding a character does not separate/upgrade from the original game, the Whac-A-Mole. Also, playtesters were satisfied to play only once; does not want to play again until they get higher scores.
Therefore, we completely changed our mechanic. Characters will move right to left and left to right and we should drop an object on them.
From here, we came up with a sushi and sushi belt idea. However, we did not want to discard the cat and rat theme so we merged these two ideas! Cat rice and Rat Wasabi! We thought dropping sashimis on rice/wasabi will be 'fun' and also aesthetically make sense to the players.
The end scores :
They have 3 stages: if your score is less or equal to 0, you receive, "Horrible!! Make sandwiches instead," if your score is greater than 0 and less than 60, "Not Bad," and if your score is greater than 60, you get, "Congrats!! Sushi Master." These are for entertainment purposes.
Lastly, we received feedback on the incoherent font style to the sprites, so we changed to a pixel style font.
